Sand Play Therapy
In the 1950s, Drs Dora M. Kalff and Margaret Lowenfeld combined the Jungian use of symbology and archetypes, with an invented apparatus to create Sandplay Therapy. Every therapy session is unique and creative, allowing clients to investigate and act out conflict and aspects of what Jung referred to as, the 'shadow side'. Sandplay allows clients to enter their own world of symbols and meanings. It can help to rediscover creativity, unblock areas that feel 'stuck' or achieve a deeper understanding of their personality. Although originally conceived for working with children, Sandplay is equally effective with adults either as individuals, couples or families. |

Art Therapy is simply the use of art and play mediums, by a clinician, in a therapeutic setting. Sandplay therapy is a type of Art therapy, which also includes drawing, clay modelling, finger painting, storytelling and the use of cards. The art and play is used as a nonverbal form of communication and as a way to externalise issues through symbolism. This style of therapy can be either non directive (usually used for children under 8 years), or directed by the therapist to explore the creation and examine how it relates to the client's presenting issues. Art therapy is suitable for all ages and can be used to establish rapport or to assess and address presenting issues. Clients do NOT need to have any creative skills to benefit from this therapy and usually find it most enjoyable. |
